Langs de Grote Rivier – A Mesolithic Adventure for Young Readers

Diederik Pomstra

As EXARC members, we probably spend a lot of time thinking and fantasising about life in the past, and Diederik Pomstra is no exception. He took over 30 years of personal experience in the outdoors, knapping flint, making baskets, and tanning skins to craft a story set in the Mesolithic period.

The book, currently available in Dutch, follows a fourteen-year-old girl who is faced with passing a traditional test to become an adult member of her community. During her solitary trial on the remote northern bank of the Great River, she is confronted with mysteries in the woods and secrets from the past. It seems that a legendary evil is more than just a legend and that the River and the Wood are setting her a task. She will have to decide what is real and what is right and the stakes are high…
