Prehistory Camps

Nordic Wintercamp

Have you ever wanted to experience what life was really like in prehistory through an immersive and interactive experience? EXARC member Markus Klek shares two opportunities for an immersive prehistoric experience: The third installment of the annual ROOTS Stoneage Immersion in Spain, and a brand new Nordic Wintercamp in Sweden.

ROOTS Stoneage Immersion

Travelling back in time to the common roots of humanity, we are claiming our ancient heritage, and encounter the ultimate back-to-basics reality. A small clan of stone age people will set up camp on a large and beautiful tract of private land, living in an oak forest, admits of nature and in proximity to abundant wildlife like wild horses, auerochs and bison. Do you want to deepen your connection with prehistoric heritage interpretation, ancient skills, living history or nature awareness? Then "Roots" might be the right format for you. Prepare and cook basic and healthy food on the open fire; learn to make and use simple tools made from stone, bone and wood; share primitive and ancestral living skills; learn fire making; shoot bow and arrow; hone your tracking skills and sense of orientation; work with local clay and fashion primitive jewellry; drink water from a spring; sleep in furs under the stars, and much more. Nordic Winter Camp

Recognizing the importance of furthering expertise in prehistoric heritage interpretation, Nordic Winter Camp offers a truly immersive opportunity for advanced ancient skills practitioners, reenactors and anybody involved in prehistoric heritage interpretation, to take their involvement to a new level. As a  dedicated group of prehistory enthusiasts, we will set up a winter base camp in a traditional Sami earth lodge, in the remote boreal landscape of southern Lapland. Joining together we form a clan to celebrate and explore the age-old wonders of winter living. In this unique setup, we will be living in a purely prehistoric way (no modern gear, metal, plastic or sanitary products etc.) For ten days, we are experiencing many aspects of prehistoric  mid-winter living,  based on archaeological data and traditional nordic crafts and life skills. This immersive format requires, wearing prehistoric clothes, working with authentic tools, eating unprocessed foods free of grains, sugar, alcohol or coffee. There will be no modern showers or sanitary facilities available. We will be practicing ancient crafts, share knowledge and skills, process reindeer meat,  go ice fishing and as a final highlight, take a multi-day trek on foot through the snowy Jämtland mountains. We will be travelling with snow shoes, wooden skis and sleds, camping and sleeping in the open under the stars. For more information, see the links below!
